Longview city officials began lowering the Lions Island totem pole at Lake Sacajawea Park at 8 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2026, according to The Daily News. The 1980s-era structure, carved by Kelso artist Rex Losey, has been at the park since the 1980s.
City staff are reviewing whether the totem pole can be repaired after assessing damage. The Daily News archives note that the totem pole was previously restored in 2001, when crews took it down for repairs.
The city has not yet announced a timeline for repairs or removal if the pole cannot be fixed. Residents are advised to check for updates from Longview Parks and Recreation.
